For the second consecutive year, BFS proudly participated in the Math Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS), an internationally recognized program based in the United States that challenges students to extend their mathematical thinking beyond the classroom. Designed for high-achieving learners in Grades 4–6, the program encourages problem solving, perseverance, and a deep love of mathematics.
This year’s program saw growing enthusiasm across the school, with 25 students from Grades 4, 5, and 6 joining the BFS Math Olympiad team. Elementary students were guided by Ms. Ann Park, while Mr. Michael Gates supported the Grade 6 mathletes.
Beginning in November, the dedicated group met weekly after school to sharpen their skills and prepare for a series of five challenging contests. Each session encouraged students to think creatively, collaborate with peers, and tackle complex problems that required persistence and determination.
On April 2, BFS celebrated the students’ hard work during a special recognition ceremony announcing the final BFS results.
Elementary (Grades 4–5)
🥇 First Place: Kyuwon L.
🥈 Second Place: Zhengxi T.
🥉 Third Place (tie): Margaret H. and Ella K.
Middle School (Grade 6)
🥇 First Place: Agatha A.
🥈 Second Place: Anthony L.
🥉 Third Place: Dylan S.
We are incredibly proud of all Math Olympiad club members for embodying the BFS Shark value of Hardworking. Through persistence, diligence, and integrity, students developed the resilience needed to tackle complex problems and produce high-quality work.
Participants shared that the experience helped them grow as confident problem solvers.
“I’m very honored to receive this award, and I want to thank my teachers and my friends for working hard and always trying to help me. Next year in math olympiad, I will try to do even better.” — Kyuwon L. (Grade 5)
“You should always try your best in Math, and if you try you’ll get what you want.” — Agatha A. (Grade 6)
Teachers also highlighted the strong engagement students showed throughout the program:
“What really impressed me about the MOEMS program was how motivated the students were to solve the problems, most of which were well above grade level. Students were eager and excited to figure out how to approach each problem and were proud of themselves when they were able to find solutions. The problem solving sessions between contests also helped build a community of students who have a shared passion for math.” – Ms. Ann Park
“MOEMS challenges students to think creatively and approach problems in different ways. It was great to see students develop persistence and resilience as they worked through challenging problems. Experiences like this help build strong problem-solving skills that will support them in mathematics and many other areas.” — Mr. Michael Gates
All participants received a certificate of participation, while the highest-achieving students in each group were awarded certificates of achievement. Medals recognizing the top-scoring student in each group and additional prizes based on worldwide results will be announced next month.
Congratulations to all of our BFS Math Olympiad participants for their commitment, curiosity, and determination. We look forward to seeing even more young mathematicians rise to the challenge next year!
