Middle School Book Review
Sylvia & Aki by Winifred Conkling
Historical Non-fiction
Sylvia & Aki, a book written by Winifred Conkling, talks about two children and their families facing different kinds of segregation because of their nationality. The book shows how the characters face challenges and sadness, adventuring through their conflicts. Every time their conflict begins, they all start to lose hope. But, their firm determination doesn’t let them give up. I would give this book a 5 out of 5 because the story has a good plot filled with adventures and challenges the characters have to overcome, leading them into a brighter future. The author opens the door towards those hard times people had to face that lie in the timeline. The story is about a period during the War of Pearl Harbor began, and where there was segregation between the skin colors of different people. This book is very meaningful for people like us, who can still learn how it feels to be stuck in a country of segregation. I would recommend this book because it is full of adventures that you never expected to happen.
