This past Saturday, the gymnasium at Busan Foreign School was transformed into a hub of collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving as middle school students participated in the inaugural Data Quest Challenge (DQC).
The day-long event brought together students from grades 6–8 who worked collaboratively to analyze real-world datasets and develop solutions to meaningful global challenges. Student teams explored topics such as the relationship between screen time and sleep, the causes and effects of air pollution, and issues surrounding water usage and accessibility. In addition to interpreting provided datasets, students were encouraged to expand their research through outside sources, allowing teams to deepen their analysis and strengthen their findings.
Throughout the challenge, students presented their ideas and conclusions before a panel of high school judges, demonstrating not only analytical thinking skills, but also confidence in communication and teamwork.
Beyond data analysis and problem solving, the Data Quest Challenge was designed to help prepare students for the rigor and collaborative expectations of high school by encouraging teamwork, student-led learning, and critical thinking skills. Events such as the DQC reflect BFS’s continued commitment to providing meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world issues.
Organizers hope the Data Quest Challenge will continue to grow as an annual tradition at BFS in the years ahead.
A special thank you goes to the BFS Service Club for organizing the event, and to Eva L. for her outstanding leadership and coordination throughout the challenge.
