At Busan Foreign School, service learning is not just an activity—it is a reflection of who our students are and the impact they strive to make. The BFS Service Club continues to embody this commitment, empowering students to take meaningful action through leadership, collaboration, and compassion.
Guided by their mission to “make a meaningful impact in our community through acts of service, leadership, and collaboration,” Service Club students recently showcased a series of student-led initiatives that demonstrate both purpose and perseverance. Each project highlighted not only a commitment to service, but also the real-world challenges and growth that come with creating lasting change.
Student-Led Initiatives Making a Difference
This semester, Service Club members worked in teams to design and implement projects addressing a wide range of community needs:
- Raising Awareness for Endometriosis
Liz, William, Marie, and Malia partnered with St. Mary’s Hospital and local women’s clinics to bring attention to individuals living with endometriosis—an often under-discussed health issue. Their work emphasized advocacy, education, and empathy. - Hospital Volunteer Initiative
Yunji, Owen, and Lauren collaborated with a local eye clinic to support patients and staff, gaining first hand insight into healthcare service and the importance of human connection in clinical settings. - MS Data Quest Challenge (May 9)
Eva, Yuanqiang, Crystal, and Ahin are leading an upcoming data-focused challenge with the support of Ms. Tempest and Mr. Kuo. This initiative blends service with academic inquiry, encouraging students to use data to solve meaningful problems. - Fundraiser for Refugee Support
Nika, Lisa, Claire, and Nika partnered with Jordan Hattar’s organization Help4Refugees to organize a fundraiser supporting refugee communities, demonstrating global awareness and a commitment to humanitarian causes.
Real-World Learning Through Service
Across all projects, students spoke candidly about the obstacles they encountered—from coordinating with external organizations to navigating logistics and time constraints. Yet, it was through these challenges that the most powerful learning occurred.
Students demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and leadership—key components of authentic service learning. More importantly, they experienced what it means to take initiative and follow through on ideas that extend beyond the classroom.
Living the BFS SHARK Values
These initiatives are a powerful reflection of the BFS SHARK values in action:
- Socially Conscious: Students addressed real community needs both locally and globally
- Hardworking: Each project required sustained effort, planning, and follow-through
- Active Communicators: Students collaborated with peers, faculty, and community partners
- Respectful: Projects were rooted in empathy and understanding of others’ experiences
- Keep Learning: Students embraced challenges and grew through the process
A Culture of Service and Leadership
The BFS Service Club’s vision of transforming the school into a “hub of compassionate action and leadership” is already becoming a reality. By building partnerships with local organizations and extending their impact into the broader Busan community, these students are creating meaningful change that reaches far beyond campus.
Their work serves as a reminder that when students are empowered with purpose, supported by community, and guided by strong values, they are capable of extraordinary impact.
