Our annual We Love Reading Month in March was full of fun and engaging literacy activities designed to inspire a love of reading across grade levels.
Beanstack Reading Challenge – Students in Grades 3–7 engaged in a reading challenge to log their independent reading time in Beanstack and competed for a class prize! The winning classes were Grade 3 with a total of 4,548 minutes and Grade 6 with a total of 9,166 minutes.
Emoji Story Title Contest – Students of all grade levels were invited to guess book titles based on emojis and submit their responses in the library. Grades 2 and 3 competed in teams and were the winners of the Picture Book challenge. For the Chapter Book Challenge, the middle school winners were Sami and Hina, and Malia, Liz, William, and Marie were the champions for high school.
Author Visit – Early Childhood and Lower Elementary students met best-selling author and illustrator Tad Hills on March 11th. Students were captivated to learn about his creative process, and they were mesmerized by his engaging storytelling and live painting demonstration of a beloved character from the series Duck & Goose.
Book Character Potatoes – Early Childhood and Elementary students brought their favorite book characters to life using potatoes. From Harry Potter to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, students’ imagination, creativity, and love of reading were on display in the lobby for all to enjoy.
Bookmark Art Contest – All Elementary students were invited to submit a bookmark design. The top 10 entries moved on to voting stage. After tallying student votes, the winners are Eubene (G1), Jeia (G3), and Jisika (G5). The winning bookmarks will be printed and available for the BFS community.
Throughout the month of March, special guests including teachers and students visited the library to read with younger students. Faculty also shared their favorite books for an inspiring display, and students and faculty posted a photo selfie, or “shelfie” with their favorite books.
BFS Librarian, Stephanie Platt shared, “During We Love Reading month, I love seeing the enthusiasm of the entire BFS community around books. The excitement of our youngest Sharks is contagious when mystery readers share stories with them, and students eagerly check out books from the Teacher Favorites display. March has become my favorite month in the library, as students from Early Childhood through High School unite to celebrate books through our various contests and special events.”
We Love Reading month was a joyful celebration of stories, creativity, and community. We are always inspired by the power of books to spark imagination and creativity as students build their love of reading.
