At Busan Foreign School, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and connected. In our Elementary School, this belief comes to life through Responsive Classroom, a research-based approach that integrates social-emotional learning with strong academics to support the whole child.

At BFS, Responsive Classroom practices are woven into daily learning through routines such as Morning Meeting, collaborative problem-solving, and reflection. Teachers use clear, positive language to help students build relationships, manage emotions, and understand expectations, creating a classroom environment where children feel confident and ready to learn.

During a recent Morning Meeting in Ms. Underwood’s Grade 2 class, students enthusiastically shared their favorite aspects of Responsive Classroom. Grade 2 student Noah K. explained that he enjoys the activities because “everyone gets to join in and move their bodies.” Classmates Ezra and Iwan shared that the greetings activity is their favorite because they love saying hello to all their friends each morning. Sasha and Analise added that they enjoy the sharing activity most, explaining that they like learning more about their classmates and having a chance to share their own feelings.

According to Ms. Underwood

“Our Morning Meeting helps us start each school day feeling connected and included. Through Responsive Classroom, students build a caring classroom community where they learn to listen to one another, show empathy, and understand their role in making our classroom a kind and inclusive place to learn and grow together.”

This approach closely aligns with BFS’s SHARK Values, helping students grow as Socially Conscious, Hardworking, and Active Communicators, while fostering Respectful community members who continue to Keep Learning. Responsive Classroom also embodies BFS’s vision to empower students to excel academically, thrive socially, and become compassionate global citizens and leaders—building the confidence, resilience, and self-awareness that support lifelong learning and leadership.
