Busan Foreign School (BFS) robotics students recently marked an exciting milestone by competing in their first official VEX V5 Robotics Tournament, hosted at St. Johnsbury Academy on January 24. The KISAC event featured the 2025–26 VEX V5 game, Push Back and brought together teams from Branksome Hall Asia, Korea International School Jeju, North London Collegiate School, St. Johnsbury Academy, and BFS.

For the BFS team, the tournament represented the culmination of months of preparation and collaboration. Throughout the season, students met regularly to brainstorm ideas, prototype and test designs, refine their robot, and document each stage of their iterative engineering process. Equal emphasis was placed on developing game strategy, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork—core elements of competitive robotics.

Competing against experienced programs, BFS delivered an impressive performance in its debut outing. The team placed 12th out of 18 teams in the Skills Rankings and finished the day with three wins and five losses across practice, qualification, and tournament matches—an encouraging result for a first-time entry that reflects both preparation and adaptability under pressure.
According to Dr. Barnes, coach of the BFS Robotics Team,
Participation in KISAC robotics was special because of the journey it took to get here. Our robotics program started with just one student who was interested in robotics a few years ago. Each year, another student helped carry that interest forward, and this season we were finally ready to compete. Like building this year’s robot, our program as a whole has required small changes and a lot of patience. By trusting the process over time, we were able to have a successful first tournament. It’s exciting to see where the program will go next.”
Beyond match results, BFS was also recognized with the Sportsmanship Award, honoring teams that exemplify professionalism, clear communication, respect for competitors, and a positive, student-centered approach throughout the event. This award speaks directly to the values the BFS robotics program seeks to cultivate—integrity, collaboration, and mutual respect.

Congratulations to Vivian Choi, Aiden Yoon, Claire Cho, Rebecca Jeong, Sunny Kim, and Dana Kim, and to their coach, Dr. Dylan Barnes, on a successful and memorable first tournament. This experience lays a strong foundation for future competitions and highlights the growing strength of robotics and STEM learning at Busan Foreign School.
