At Busan Foreign School (BFS), we are committed to preparing students for the future while ensuring their well-being today. Two topics at the center of education worldwide—the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the balance of digital screen time—are now under thoughtful review by our faculty as part of our ongoing focus on teaching and learning.

Ethical Use of AI in the Classroom

This fall, Mrs. Platt, our school librarian, led a professional development session with the Secondary teaching team on the ethical use of AI. Together, they explored how new technologies can be integrated into learning while preserving the hallmarks of a strong education: creativity, critical thinking, and academic integrity. By bringing student voices into the discussion, BFS is ensuring that AI is used as a tool to enhance—not replace—the human elements of teaching and learning.

Finding Balance with Screen Time

Meanwhile, Elementary and Early Childhood Principal, Mrs. Harvey, guided a workshop with our Elementary teachers on research from The Anxious Generation and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Teachers reflected on both the benefits of digital devices and the need for balance in young learners’ lives. The outcome of these conversations will inform a new school-wide screen time policy, supporting both digital literacy and healthy, face-to-face interaction.

A Culture of Collaboration at BFS

These sessions are part of BFS’s weekly professional growth sessions. Every Wednesday after school, teachers meet in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) by division or leadership group to share best practices, align instruction across grade levels, and strengthen the student learning experience.

Looking Ahead

This review of AI and screen time highlights BFS’s forward-looking and student-centered approach. By empowering staff leaders like Mrs. Platt and Mrs. Harvey to guide discussions, BFS continues to foster a collaborative culture where educators learn from one another and prepare students to thrive in a rapidly changing world — highlighting one of our SHARK values — Keep Learning!
