This month, we’re happy to feature Dr. Barnes, who has taught Computer Science at BFS for over six years. Dr. Barnes teaches Middle School CS, Intro to CS in Python, and AP Computer Science, focusing on practice, persistence, and resilience. You might also find him coaching sports on the BFS courts throughout the year.

In September, Dr. Barnes assembled a new cohort for the BFS Computer Science Honor Society, a student-led group of seven members, backed by the Computer Science Teachers Association. The society fosters enthusiasm, academic excellence, and service, with members modeling SHARK values. Their next goals are to host the Codementum Coding Competition for the elementary division and provide computer science tutoring for students needing support.

In December, Dr. Barnes will lead BFS teams in the Codementum International Coding Competition, which BFS has proudly joined for three years. Last year, our high school team earned an impressive 7th place internationally after a 1st place win in 2022, showcasing their dedication and teamwork amongst thousands of schools worldwide.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Barnes has helped transform our robotics club into a competitive team. The group of eight students is preparing for their first competition at the KISAC Robotics Tournament at Saint Johnsbury Academy in Jeju in February 2025. With materials on the way, excitement is building for the team to showcase their skills.

Dr. Barnes’ vision and his students’ enthusiasm highlight BFS’s commitment to a dynamic and innovative environment across all his pursuits.
