The elementary learning years are crucial in shaping a person’s overall development and laying the foundation for future success. Our Elementary School (ES) program focuses on developing students’ understanding of our SHARK values along with American standards-based academics. BFS follows the challenging Common Core State Standards for Literacy and Mathematics, the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Overseas Schools AERO Standards for Social Studies, and the innovative and challenging Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). To support students’ social-emotional development, BFS uses evidence-based approaches that focus on the link between academic success and social-emotional learning (SEL) with Second Step and Responsive Classroom. Quarterly health and human development lessons based on the Ontario Human Development standards and encourage students in Grades 1-5 to understand their physical and emotional development and to make healthy life choices.

A Typical Day for Elementary Students

Our elementary students spend most of their day with their homeroom teacher being instructed on core subjects such as Math, Social Studies, Reading, Writing, and Science. Specialist teachers instruct students in areas of Art, Music, Languages (Korean or Spanish), Physical Education (P.E.), Makerspace, and Library. At the end of the day, students have the opportunity to learn beyond the classroom through our After School Activities program.
