Ms. Lauren Harvey is thrilled to be the Early Childhood and Elementary Principal (PK – Grade 5) after previously serving as the BFS PK-12 Vice Principal from 2016-2019. She has also served in educational leadership positions in Indiana, Hawaii, and Jeju-do. Ms. Harvey is passionate about ensuring a safe, joyful, and engaging learning environment that supports all students to develop academic and socioemotional skills. Ms. Harvey believes that BFS is a small school with a big heart where every student is known and valued, and she appreciates collaborating with all members of the diverse BFS community. Ms. Harvey is a proud member of the ISS Diversity Collaborative, National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP).

In her free time, Ms. Harvey enjoys spending time with her family and dog, reading non-fiction, and listening to music.

Mr. Brenneman is happy to be leading the Middle and High School and looks forward to helping teachers support student learning and growth. He is passionate about student involvement and leadership in academics, athletics and the arts. BFS is a great place for students to discover their strengths, take chances, and develop the skills they need to be successful wherever their journey takes them.

He and Ms. Brenneman are the proud parents of two children, both Third Culture Kids making their way in the world. To stay in touch with them, he keeps his world clock settings for the U.S. West Coast and Europe. He is happy to talk with parents and students about how to navigate the exciting tension of living between cultures.

If he’s not at BFS, chances are you’ll find him on the trails of Jangsan, exploring and staying connected to the natural world.

Mr. Saunders will start his 16th year at Busan Foreign School as the Director of Admissions and College Counseling. After graduating from Ithaca College, his first career path took him to Washington, D.C., working in the U.S. Congress as a legislative assistant and assistant press secretary. After trying his hand at the federal level of government, Mr. Saunders returned to his home state of Massachusetts, taking on the role of chief of staff for a state senator in Boston. He left the world of politics and became the manager of major corporate accounts for Akamai Technologies.

Mr. Saunders discovered his passion for teaching after volunteering at the Boston Area Red Cross, teaching history and civics to adults on the path to U.S. citizenship. Mr. Saunders’ transitioned to education over 20 years ago. He taught in the western suburbs of Boston before throwing his hat into the international teaching ring and landing here at Busan Foreign School.

Ms. Teal is joining BFS from Tennessee, US, and has previously worked in Vietnam and Thailand. As the facilitator of a school’s story, she collaborates with everyone (teachers, students, parents, staff, etc.) to make sure the school’s and individual stories are heard. This starts with fostering and building relationships with all community members on trust and a shared vision for the school. Ms. Teal aims for all families and staff to feel welcomed and recognized as esteemed school community members. Giving everyone a voice and telling their stories empowers them while showing what our amazing school is all about. Together, we stay connected, our relationships grow, and we welcome new families into our community that cultivates the same principles. In her free time, Ms. Teal likes to do Muay Thai boxing, travel, ride her motorcycle, read, and binge a good tv show!

Ms. Rodriguez is from Texas, USA and currently teaches in Korea. She has six years of experience in special education, learning support, and English as an additional language. Ms. Singley is joining BFS from Los Angeles, CA where she transitioned from middle school English/language arts teacher to counseling. As a school counselor, Ms. Singley truly trusts students to be capable of achieving that which they visualize. She leads with empathy, open communication and flexibility. She is in students’ corner, advocating and encouraging them to bloom into their roles within their school and global communities. In her free time, Ms. Singley likes to explore cafes and drink good coffee, museums, galleries, travel, and write and sing.

Ms. Cottier grew up in rural Illinois and then ventured to Iowa for college. She received a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in English/Language Arts, to finish her degree she traveled to Singapore to student teach at Singapore American School. After graduating, she taught for a year in Iowa, then again went abroad to Kuwait for two years to teach. She then completed her masters degree in teacher leadership while teaching at BFS.

Ms. Cottier is excited to start her fourth year at BFS, her goal is to create a group of avid learners and thinkers while also creating bonds with her students. In her spare time, Ms. Cottier enjoys baking, reading, playing board games, listening to music, and traveling.

Dr. Barnes comes to BFS from Tampa, FL. He grew up in New Jersey and found his devotion for teaching and mentoring as a teenager serving as a summer camp counselor and director. Dr. Barnes received his bachelor’s degree in secondary social science education from the University of South Florida. Additionally, Dr. Barnes completed his master’s degree and doctorate in Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction, respectively.

Dr. Barnes is a strong advocate for life-long learning. As an educator, Dr. Barnes strives not only to instruct on various topics of study, but to facilitate learning through practical, real-world application and critical thinking that will continue to benefit students outside of his classroom.

In his spare time, Dr. Barnes enjoys many diverse interests, but mostly spends his time playing ice hockey, reading, drinking coffee, and enjoying the tactile processes of analog photography.

Ms. Sandstrom has over ten years experience in teaching early childhood education. She has taught in the United States, Kuwait, and Burma. She was also a Peace Corps Volunteer in Northern Macedonia, where her job was to teach English to 4th- 8th graders. Her goal is to create a welcoming classroom environment where all students feel welcome, safe, and are excited to learn.

In her free time she enjoys running, reading and traveling to new places. This is her first year in South Korea and she can’t wait to try the food and learn more about the country.

Ms Smyth is looking forward to her third year at BFS! Originally from Montreal, Canada, Ms. Smyth has taught in Canada, Australia, China and South Korea. Ms. Smyth has experience teaching in remote Indigenous communities in Canada, public and private schools, and in International schools abroad. Ms. Smyth’s passion for education is in redesigning learning environments. Through her research in her M.A she explored the importance of meaningful places in childhood.

Ms. Smyth has designed a variety of learning environments in schools focusing on the physical environment, and promoting the importance of inquiry-based learning through exploration, discovery and play within the natural environment.

In her spare time, Ms. Smyth enjoys traveling and exploring the outdoors. She enjoys hiking, biking, camping, snorkeling, and playing soccer.

Ms. Underwood is looking forward to her second year at BFS as the second grade teacher. She comes from a military family and has moved around most of her life. Ms. Underwood focuses on relationship building and forming strong connections in the classroom so that students feel comfortable, safe, and enriched.

When she is not teaching, Ms. Underwood loves to travel, read, enjoy live music, try out new restaurants with friends, and go to the movies.

Ms. Ndjana is coming from Dallas, TX and has taught a variety of grade levels in Texas, Korea and Spain. In her free time, Ms. Ndjana truly enjoys being home; either reading a book, watching a movie, or writing. She loves the arts, photography, drawing, painting and musicals. Depending on the season and mood, she can spend hours inside a museum or botanical garden. She is an avid fan of cafes or patios because she can sit and relax while observing the world.

Miss Pehl is excited for her eleventh year of teaching and her second year at BFS. Before coming to Korea, Miss Pehl taught fourth grade in Colombia and a 3rd/4th grade class in Arizona. She is excited to join the community at BFS and help her students grow as learners.

In her free time Miss Pehl enjoys cooking healthy food, reading fiction books, hiking big mountains, and exploring new places!

Mr. Hernandez will be continuing his international teaching in Korea. His past educational opportunities include teaching in Albania, Egypt, Korea, and the United States. He is ecstatic to be teaching 5th grade for a 4th straight year.

When not teaching, you can find Mr. Hernandez watching Cocomelon with his wife and daughter, reading a bestseller, hiking, watching a movie at the cinema, or catching a foul ball at a baseball game. Ms. Kim was born in Korea, but moved to Atlanta, Georgia when she was 8 years old. Ms. Kim has always dreamed of becoming a teacher ever since she was a kid. After following her dreams to become a teacher, she taught four years in Georgia and two years in Korea. During the six years of her teaching career, she worked with a large variety of students such as English Language Learners, students with learning disabilities, and gifted students. This will be Ms. Kim’s second-year teaching at BFS, and she is beyond excited! Ms. Kim loves to see children explore their learning through projects and hands-on activities.

In her free time, Ms. Kim loves to spend time with her dog, Luna. She also loves volleyball, watching movies, spending time with friends, and exploring new places. Ms. Kim hopes to discover new places and hobbies during her time in Busan!

Ms. Hwang graduated from Busan Art high school, Dong-A University and pursued her higher education in Vancouver, Canada. She has been teaching arts at Busan Foreign School for twenty years! Ms. Hwang teaches all classes, from Elementary to AP Studio Art and Design. Her courses covers a gamut of arts ranging from visual concepts to theory for the elementary grades, to visual communication for AP Studio Art and G6 through G12. Ms. Hwang’s art classes provide students with the means to apply their art productions in a variety of media within the contexts of critical thinking and broaden their social perspectives. Ms. Hwang is married and has one daughter.

In her free time she enjoys experimenting with art media and painting pictures. She also likes hiking, traveling, and exploring new cultures with her family.

Mrs. Pochon is excited to start another year at BFS. Prior to coming to BFS, Mrs. Pochon taught music and choir for 4 years at Danville Public Schools in Virginia. She graduated from Liberty University in Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son, singing karaoke, playing instruments, and video talking with her family in America. Mrs. Pochon is passionate about the growing music program at BFS, and sincerely believes she has the best profession in the world!

She is passionate about creating an enjoyment and excitement in young students and musicians for learning music.

Mr. Galles joined BFS in 2016 as the BFS Shark Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher (K-12). Mr. Galles came to BFS after spending a little more than two decades teaching and leading programs in Tokyo at an American international school quite similar in size and scope to BFS.

Originally from the state of Iowa in the U.S., Mr. Galles and his family have called northern Minnesota home since 1996, where, along with his siblings and parents operate an international summer camp program during the holidays.

As Mr. Galles enters his eighth year at BFS he is eager to continue working hard in support of all BFS students and their families.

Ms. Platt calls Baltimore, Maryland home but has also lived in East Tennessee, England (for a brief but transformative time), and New York City, where she began her career teaching English/Language Arts. She spent 8 years as an Elementary School Librarian in Maryland and is excited to return to BFS for her second year and connect with students through the world of books.

Besides reading, Mrs. Platt loves exploring wonders great and small with her kids (3 and 4 yrs old) and husband Rufus, drawing and crafting, trying new foods, and learning and drawing inspiration from the people around her.

Ms. Calderón is from Bogotá, Colombia and holds a Bachelor’s degree and teaching licensure in Bilingual Education. She is fluent in both Spanish and English and has a passion for promoting cross-cultural understanding through education. Ms. Calderón has taught students across age and proficiency levels, and she finds that a student-centered approach that acknowledges that each student is unique and has different learning styles and preferences results in increased engagement and motivation among students, as they feel valued and supported in their learning journey. In her free time, Andrea enjoys reading, swimming, and cooking.

Ms. Lee joined BFS as a high school tutor, and has been working as a part of the BFS team for over 12 years. She has a variety of experience in different educational areas and age groups. Although she majored in science, her interest in different languages and cultures led her to a deeper study of her mother tongue, and becoming a Korean Language teacher. She incorporates Korean cultural activities to her classes in order to make them more joyful. Miss Lee is very excited to support our students’ growth emotionally, socially as well as academically.

In her free time, she likes going to the movies and Art galleries, loves taking photos and rendering them into beautiful paintings. She is looking forward to meeting new BFS families and very excited to bring many culture-related activities to the Korean classes this year.

This is Mr. Kavanaugh’s third year teaching at Busan Foreign School. Mr. Kavanaugh previously taught at St. Paul American School in Hanoi and Truesdell Education Campus in Washington D.C. before joining BFS. Mr. Kavanaugh is originally from Michigan, but has also lived and worked in Vietnam and South Korea. For Mr. Kavanaugh, education is based on the principles of having fun in class, using data to provide personalized learning for each student, and helping students internalize a growth mindset.

When not in school, Mr. Kavanaugh enjoys playing music, ice hockey, studying Korean, and relaxing at the beach. He is also an avid traveler and loves to find himself in a new place experiencing different cultures and eating delicious food.

She has worked on curriculum development, leadership teams, and various other committees throughout her career. Ms. So, her husband, and their daughter are thrilled to be part of BFS community.

Her teaching adventures introduced her to Taiwan and South Korea, where she and her husband raised their two children. This is her fourth year at BFS.

Having grown up near Glacier National Park, Ms. Brenneman loves exploring beautiful places. Sometimes she is trekking mountain trails, sometimes quietly reading on a sunny beach; she enjoys discovering new things, especially about the students in her classroom. This is going to be a fresh and fun new school year!

Ms. Amorós (or Miss A) loves to teach; she is passionate about growing and learning alongside her students. She has been teaching for over a decade, and before coming to BFS, she taught in Bogotá, Colombia and the Bay Area of California. She has traveled to many places around the world with her husband, Aristotle, and Busan is one of their favorite places to live so far because of the food, nature, and culture. Miss A has a dog named Lulu and a cat named Bon Bon who love to sunbathe. To continue exploring the world, she likes to solo travel, eat flavor-packed food, look for good coffee, and spot wildlife. Miss A is committed to justice work in and outside of the classroom, and pushes herself to learn from different perspectives.

Mr. Bishop is excited to be joining the BFS community this year for his 4th year of teaching. Previously, he taught a wide range of Social Studies and English Language Arts classes in Seattle, Washington. He is passionate about cross-cultural engagement and dialogue across differences. Throughout life, he has found great meaning in living, working, and learning amidst diverse groups of people. He believes each person who enters the classroom has unique insights and experiences that can benefit the growth of the entire learning community. In this way he recognizes the salience of creating space where we can authentically engage with and learn from one another.

He also sees literature as a powerful medium for fostering connection and engaging with new perspectives. There is a creative magic about how it can challenge, inspire, and raise important questions about the self, community, and the world. Thus, in his time at BFS Mr. Bishop hopes to encourage a passion for literature, a commitment to critical thinking, and a disposition towards open-mindedness that will serve students well throughout their lives.

Mr. Hanawalt is entering his nineteenth year of teaching and fifth year at BFS.  He started his career teaching at the middle school level in his home state of Iowa in the United States. Then, he spent nine years teaching all levels of high school mathematics at the American School Foundation of Monterrey in Mexico. In the classroom, his goal is to establish an enjoyable classroom culture where students understand mathematics at a deep level. He believes in using investigative-based lessons to help students understand the connections among topics.

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Hanawalt enjoys visiting family and friends, traveling, reading, playing golf, running, biking, and exploring Korea.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Mr. Yang spent most of his childhood in various countries – mainly in Russia, Thailand, China, and the United States. As a former student of international schools himself, he loves being part of the diverse and family-like community that are unique to schools like BFS. In 2015, after completing his mandatory military service in the Korean air force, Mr. Yang found his passion for teaching when he taught at QSI International School of Minsk in Belarus. His connection with BFS began as a student teacher in 2017. Knowing how friendly, energetic, and talented the BFS family is, he is excited and honored to be able to return to BFS, situated in one of the most beautiful coastal cities in Korea.

Mr. Yang loves playing all kinds of sports. Tennis, which he used to play competitively in high school, is one of his favorites. In addition, he is a certified ice hockey referee in Korea. In his spare time, he enjoys playing sports and spending time with friends.

During the six years of her teaching career, she worked with a large variety of students including English Language Learners, students with learning disabilities, and gifted students. This will be Ms. Kim’s third year teaching at BFS, and she is looking forward to another year of fun and creative learning! Ms. Hwang graduated from Busan Art high school, Dong-A University and pursued her higher education in Vancouver, Canada. She has been teaching arts at Busan Foreign School for twenty years! Ms. Hwang teaches all classes, from Elementary to AP Studio Art and Design. Her courses covers a gamut of arts ranging from visual concepts to theory for the elementary grades, to visual communication for AP Studio Art and G6 through G12. Ms. Hwang’s art classes provide students with the means to apply their art productions in a variety of media within the contexts of critical thinking and broaden their social perspectives. Ms. Hwang is married and has one daughter.

Dr. Barnes comes to BFS from Tampa, FL. He grew up in New Jersey and found his devotion for teaching and mentoring as a teenager serving as a summer camp counselor and director. Additionally, Dr. Barnes completed his master’s degree and doctorate in Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction, respectively.

After almost eight years in professional journalism and communications, he reconnected with his passion for languages.

Mr. Cassinello started his teaching career 8 years ago teaching French and Spanish as a foreign language in India. After 3 years in the mountains, he moved to West Africa, Ghana, where he found again an amazing multicultural environment.

In his free time, he travels as much as possible. He loves discovering new cultures, cuisines, and different ways of living. He is also passionate about cinema and outdoor activities, such as hiking, running, and soccer.

Mr. Kebbas is honored to be continuing on with Busan Foreign School for another year. Having begun his teaching career in 2015, he has had opportunities to teach under different conditions in both California and South Korea. Mr. Kebbas sought out the co-teaching experience (which initially brought him to South Korea) where he has taught alongside several consummate professionals. Mr. Kebbas understands the importance of upholding high standards; helping students achieve more than they expect they can.

As an ELA Writing teacher for grades 6-8 and the MS/HS ELL specialist, Mr. Kebbas seeks to help students prosper. Overall, Mr. Kebbas believes that good rapport and healthy communication between students and teachers contributes towards an enjoyable learning experience for all. As a mother who raised her daughter abroad, she understands the international school system as well. Ms. Lee would like to extend her knowledge and experience over to Busan Foreign School with her enthusiasm.

Over the past few years, Ms. Son has been employed in positions of overseas sales specialist that have had a primary focus on all different national clients service. Additionally, She has gained experience with the consulate, where she assisted the operation team by dealing with customer enquiries and issues. She looks forward to putting the knowledge and skills that she has developed into practice and the first year at Busan Foreign School.

Mr. Seonghyun Park, joined Busan Foreign School in 2023. Prior to coming to BFS, He has worked as an oversea sales specialist for two and a half years.
Through his international business experience, he gained an understanding of the differences between cultures and countries and has developed the ability to adapt to these differences.
Mr. Park enjoys cooking in his free time. Trying new dishes and discovering new flavors is a lot of fun, and he loves sharing meals with friends and family.

Hyun Suk Kim graduated from Busan Catholic University with a major in Clinical Pathology. She has a license as a clinical pathologist. She has worked at the children’s hospital and Health Promotion Center for 10 years. She also majored in English literature at the Korean National Open University. Last year she took the Korea Red Cross certificate for first- aid. Ms. Kim is always ready to help students when they need her.

Jason Lee – Finance Director (jlee@bfs.or.kr)

Jason Lee joined BFS June 2017. He has a strong background in finance and strategy. His past experience includes five and a half years as a management consultant at Deloitte, and a year working in the strategy department of Hyundai Motor Group. Jason spent one year in London pursuing an MBA.

During his spare time Jason enjoys playing golf, and spending time with his family.

Ms. Ha comes to us after three years working at Inje University Hospital as a nurse. With a strong background in computer sciences, she is excited to expand her knowledge to the education industry, working for the Finance department.

Ms. Choi started her career at BFS after graduating from Changwon National University. While in College, she worked on marketing projects for the Korea Airport Corporation (KAC), and Changwon City. She received a grand award for her designs from the Korea Airport Corporation. Ms. Choi understands the importance that good design plays in communicating with stakeholders.

Ms. Chang has bachelors’ degree in Computer Engineering from Pukyong National University.

This is Ms. Chang’s sixth year at BFS. Although having worked for several international organizations, it is her experience as a volunteer in Ukraine, teaching and helping children, that prompted her to apply to BFS.

She is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and creating lasting memories with the children of BFS.

After studying Hospitality & Tourism Management in college, Lina worked as a hotelier for 10 years. Lina hopes to help children to stand on their own feet with a kind heart.

Yuri Chung – Library Assistant (yrchung@bfs.or.kr)

  • Busan University of Foreign Studies: Bachelors in Chinese Studies

Ms. Chung has various experiences. She had her career as a flight attendant working for Korean Air, as an HR administrator for Samsung Group as well as a librarian at a public library.

She loves being with kids at school and in her free time she enjoys playing the violin in the church orchestra weekly and also enjoys going on a trip.
