Iain Macfarlane, the Principal of Busan Foriegn School, is excited to enter his fifth year of leading this amazing school. Prior to coming to BFS he served as the principal of an international school in Kuwait, where he worked for 8 years.

A teacher at heart, Iain loves working with students, parents and teachers to create a community environment where all members embrace diversity and strive for excellence.

When he is not working, Iain loves spending time with his wife and son.

Carl Brenneman is excited to be back at BFS as assistant principal. Before coming to BFS he has worked in school administration, as a classroom teacher, and curriculum coordinator at schools in the US, Taiwan and South Korea. He hopes to continue making BFS a safe place for all students to learn and grow. He is passionate about coaching volleyball and looks for ways to involve students in sports and the arts to help them build lasting positive memories of school.

Busan is a great place to hike and run along mountain trails and the ocean so he has been able to find great places to exercise. He enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter and son, cooking and laughing together.

Mr. Saunders will be starting his 15th year at Busan Foreign School as the Director of Admissions and College Counseling. After graduating from Ithaca College, his first career path took him to Washington, D.C. working in the U.S. Congress as a legislative assistant and assistant press secretary. While in Washington, D.C. he pursued his graduate degree earning an M.A. from American University. After trying his hand at the federal level of government, Mr. Saunders returned to his home state of Massachusetts taking on the role of chief of staff for a state senator in Boston. He left the world of politics and became manager of major corporate accounts for Akamai Technologies based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Mr. Saunders discovered his passion for teaching after volunteering at the Boston Area Red Cross, teaching history and civics to adults on the path to U.S. citizenship. Mr. Saunders’ transitioned to education over 15 years ago as he became a certified high school social studies teacher in the state of Massachusetts. He taught in the western suburbs of Boston before throwing his hat into the international teaching ring landing here at Busan Foreign School.

Rebecca Austin-Castillo joins Busan Foreign School this year from Northern California, where she spent 13 years as a school psychologist. Ms. Austin-Castillo is excited to meet everyone at BFS and start supporting students holistically, helping them achieve both academic and personal goals. She believes in creating environments that foster growth and connection.

Outside of work, Ms. Austin-Castillo loves to travel and explore the outdoors with her husband and daughter. She is also an avid hiker, runner, and reader. The whole family is very excited to begin a new chapter in Busan!

Brenda Aguilar is looking forward to teaching fourth grade for her 3rd year in a row. She brings a total of 8 years teaching experience in lower and upper elementary. Prior to teaching in South Korea, Brenda taught in Mexico and Washington D.C. Previously and during her time in the US, she taught kindergarten and second grade at a public charter school that focuses on bilingual education and project-based learning (Expeditionary Learning).

Brenda is originally from Los Angeles, California so she naturally enjoys exploring the outdoors; hiking, climbing, and discovering new places.

Matthew Hanawalt is entering his sixteenth year of teaching and second year at BFS. He started his career teaching at the middle school level in his home state of Iowa in the United States. Then, he spent nine years were spent teaching all levels of high school mathematics at the American School Foundation of Monterrey in Mexico. In the classroom, his goal is to establish an enjoyable classroom culture where students understand mathematics at a deep level. He believes in using investigative-based lessons to help students understand the connections among topics.

Outside of the classroom, Matthew enjoys visiting family and friends, traveling, reading, golf, running, and exploring Korea.

Mr. Gates is a native of La Crosse, Wisconsin and is enjoying his eighth year teaching secondary mathematics at Busan Foreign School. In addition to teaching, Mr. Gates has also enjoyed various coaching opportunities, including middle school and high school basketball and volleyball.

In his free time, he enjoys learning about new things and cultures, listening to music, watching sports, and staying active. He is grateful for all of the opportunities and challenges presented during his time teaching at BFS, both in and out of the classroom.

Patrick Galles joined BFS in 2016 as the BFS Shark Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher (K-12). Mr. Galles came to BFS after spending a little more than two decades teaching and leading programs in Tokyo at an American international school quite similar in size and scope to BFS.

Originally from the state of Iowa in the U.S., Pat and his family have called northern Minnesota home since 1996, where, along with his siblings and parents operate an international summer camp program during the summer holidays.

As Mr. Galles enters his fifth year at BFS he is eager to continue working in support of all BFS students and their families.

Stacie Kjelden is excited to be joining the BFS team this year. Her teaching career began in Houston, Texas as a preschool teacher. Soon Ms. Kjelden’s desire to travel and explore the world led her to Spain where she was an English teacher for students of all ages. During this time Ms. Kjelden discovered her love of teaching ESL students and returned to the United States to teach at a bilingual school in Denver, Colorado while working toward a master’s degree in Teaching English Language Learners. Ms. Kjelden is very excited to begin a new teaching adventure in South Korea.

In her free time Ms. Kjelden enjoys hiking, camping, swimming and reading.

Ariana is thrilled to return to the BFS community for her third year. Originally hailing from the rural state of Pennsylvania, she completed her undergrad education and started her career as an early childhood educator in the Philippines. Ariana hopes to bring her love of teaching and learning wherever she goes.

In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, reading, and being outside with loved ones. Ariana looks forward to another great learning journey with her students this school year!

This is Mark Ehrke’s second year teaching Kindergarten at BFS. Mark taught at the International School of Beijing for the fifteen years immediately prior to joining BFS. In addition to teaching Kindergarten there, he also taught Grade 1. Mark is originally from Minnesota, but has also lived and worked in Germany, Singapore, Vancouver, Canada, and San Jose, California. For Mark education is a two-way street. He strives to nurture the love of learning in children, but also endeavors continually to learn from the children he teaches.

Mark enjoys walking/hiking, swimming, reading, music, and working with computers, but particularly loves food and travel. When he visits other places, those two loves intersect with visits to markets, exploration of local ingredients and foods, cooking courses, and visits to restaurants/food outlets. When he is not traveling, Mark is watching cooking shows from around the world, where he often finds inspiration when cooking for himself or others.

Mr. Cassel is excited for his first year as a licensed teacher at BFS after completing his student-teaching as a Shark! His teaching career has taken him to Seoul, Osaka, Hanoi, and Busan. Originally from the sweetest place on Earth, Hershey, Pennsylvania, he loves to travel. His passion for teaching lies with primary students as he enjoys their enthusiasm and excitement for learning!

His extracurricular interests include one year old twins. He also loves going on adventures with his wife, Rebecca, hiking, time on the beach/in the ocean, and ice hockey.

Ms. Cleary is excited to begin her third year teaching Grade 2 at BFS! She was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. Her desire to be a teacher began early as she worked in YMCA outdoor youth camps. After graduating from high school, she moved to Bellingham, Washington, and began work on a degree in Sociology at Western Washington University. From there, she transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle where she finished her degree in Sociology and earned a K-8 Teaching Certificate. Ms. Cleary taught Kindergarten through Grade 5 in the Shoreline School District for many years. A highlight of her career was moving to Ankara, Turkey where she taught Grade 3 at Bilkent Laboratory and International School. During her years at BLIS, she enjoyed teaching the Primary Years Program.

Growing up and living in the Pacific Northwest Ms. Cleary has taken advantage of wonderful outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, biking and camping. Traveling has also been a big part of Ms. Cleary’s life. However, her most favorite thing to do is spend time with her son and daughter and their families.

Miss Boettcher grew up in Canada, right beside the Rocky Mountains. She has spent the past 21 years traveling the world and educating children. She has taught in Northern Canada, Thailand, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Columbia, Saudi Arabia and Busan.

When not traveling the world she enjoys reading, spending time with her nephews/niece and hiking. She is thrilled to be starting her third year at Busan Foreign School.

Ms. Widholm loves learning and teaching. She has been teaching for over nineteen years. Ms. Widholm began teaching design at the University level at the University of Kansas and The American Academy of Art in Chicago before moving to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where she taught seven different subjects to middle and high school students. She have been the Visual Art Teacher in Champaign, Illinois (my hometown) for the past thirteen years. Ms. Widholm is a “maker” and loves creating artwork and design. Her daughter and she love to travel and go to concerts. Ms. Widholm is a rock fan and her daughter loves KPop; they have been to three KPop concerts in Chicago. Ms. Widholm’s favorite place to be is on a warm beach. She has been to twenty-seven countries on four continents and looks forward to living in Busan and teaching at BFS.

Ms. Hwang was born and raised in Korea and pursued her higher education in Vancouver, Canada. She has been teaching arts at Busan Foreign School for eighteen years. Ms. Hwang teaches from Elementary to AP Studio Art. Her teaching covers a gamut of arts ranging from visual concepts to theory for the elementary grades, to visual communication for AP Studio Art and G6 through G12. Her art classes provide students with the means to apply their art productions in a variety of media within the contexts of critical thinking and broaden their social perspectives.

Ms. Hwang is married and has one daughter. In her free time, she enjoys creating and painting pictures. She also loves traveling, exploring new cultures with her family, and collecting minerals with her daughter.

Becki Pochon will start her second year at BFS. Prior to coming to BFS, Mrs. Pochon taught music and choir for 4 years at Danville Public Schools in Virginia. She graduated from Liberty University in Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, singing karaoke, playing instruments, and video talking with her family in America.

Mrs. Pochon is passionate about growing the music program at BFS, and sincerely believes she has the best profession in the world! She is passionate about creating an enjoyment and excitement in young students and musicians for learning music.

Ms. Gleb grew up on Vashon Island, Washington; her father and mother were both teachers. After university, she became an officer in the United States Air Force, serving tours of duty in the United States, England, and Turkey. She has been teaching for 19 years; prior to moving to Busan, she taught for three years in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.

Heidi’s passions are traveling, reading, and volksmarching (non-competitive walking). Her frequent travel companion is her identical twin sister; they enjoy visiting UNESCO World Heritage sites. Heidi hopes her son, Jack, will be able to visit her as well. She is excited to return for her third year as a BFS SHARK!

After five years of working as a counselor in Spain, Ms. Martínez moved to the foothills of the Himalayas, in India, where she started her career as a Spanish teacher. She was able to combine her passions; sharing her mother tongue and culture, connecting with a multicultural community, and teaching her students to communicate through a new language. After three years there and led by her passion of exploring new places and learning new skills, Ms. Martínez moved to West Africa, Ghana, where she has been teaching Spanish for the last two years.

Ms. martínez has really enjoyed the world of international teaching, where every student brings a fresh perspective to language learning and enriches the experience with their varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds. These experiences have helped her to open her mind, better understand others’ perspectives, and get a better grip on reality. Outside the classroom, Ms. Martínez loves exploring her surroundings, traveling and connecting with new people, places, cultures, and languages (can´t wait to start learning Korean). She also likes Yoga, Aerial silk, reading and hiking.

Heejin Lee joined BFS as a high school tutor, and has been working as a part of the BFS team for over 11 years. She has a variety of experience in different educational areas and age groups. Although she majored in science, her interest in different languages and cultures led her to a deeper study of her mother tongue, and becoming a Korean Language teacher. She incorporates Korean cultural activities to her classes in order to make them more joyful. Miss Lee is very excited to support our students’ growth emotionally, socially as well as academically. In her free time, she likes going to the movies and Art galleries, loves taking photos and rendering them into beautiful paintings. She is looking forward to meeting new BFS families and very excited to bring many culture-related activities to the Korean classes this year.

Angela Suk was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. She has taught in Canada, Australia, Kuwait, and Korea. She has taught in the upper elementary and middle school grade levels as both a core classroom teacher and specialist teacher. This is Ms. Suk’s fifth year at BFS.

In her free time, Angela enjoys camping with her family, hiking, reading, and cooking. She also enjoys traveling to new cultures and exploring new areas with her family. She hopes to engage her students to become risk takers in a safe and supportive environment.

Olga So starts her twelfth year at BFS. She is excited and proud to be an upper Elementary ELL teacher. Olga was born in Sakhalin Island, Russia and lived in Seattle, Washington and Redondo Beach, California. She holds Master of Arts in Elementary Education and Montessori Teaching Diploma. She is a member of Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and Phi Delta Kappa International since 2006. Olga So has taught diverse students in the U.S.A. and Korea. She has worked on curriculum development, leadership teams, and various other committees throughout her career. Olga So, her husband, and their high school daughter are thrilled to be part of BFS community. She is passionate about children, animals, cultures, languages, reading, traveling, and learning.

Ms. Gaynor joined the BFS team a year ago. After teaching special education and reading for over 20 years in Arizona and Oregon she decided to explore the world of education outside the U.S. Deborah’s education and personal journeys have taken her to Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Egypt before coming to Korea. In Nigeria, she was the Learning Support Coordinator as well as the behavior intervention specialist for grades K-12 at the International School in Abuja. In Zimbabwe, Deborah was the Learning Support Specialist for grades K-3 and the PYP program at the Harare International School. She also led assessment trainings for the elementary staff. In Egypt, Deborah was the Learning Support and ESL teacher for Grade 3 at The American International School in Egypt.

When not teaching, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, hiking, running, reading, cooking, and going to baseball and football games!

Ashley Cottier grew up in rural Illinois and then ventured to Iowa for college. She received a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in English/Language Arts, to finish her degree she traveled to Singapore to student teach at Singapore American School. After graduating, she taught for a year in Iowa, then again went abroad to Kuwait for two years to teach.

Ashley is excited to start her first year at BFS, her goal is to create a group of avid learner and thinkers while also creating bonds with her studnets. In her spare time, Ashley enjoys baking, reading, playing board games, listening to music, and traveling.

Erik Nelson – MS English Language Arts ([email protected])

Erik enters his fourteenth year of teaching, and his fourth at B.F.S.. His first eight years were in Montana, three on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, and five in the ranching community of Ennis located in the beautiful Madison Valley. His overseas journey started in Kuwait at ASK for two years and then on to Busan, South Korea.

Erik enjoys hiking throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, camping with his family, is an avid reader, and enjoys painting wildlife portraits in acrylic. He also rips on the harmonica and is a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan. He is married to Christy Nelson, an elementary teacher here at Busan Foreign School, and has two children, Mason Lee, 8 and Elsie Mae, 5.

Erik has enjoyed the world of international teaching and all it has to offer. He and his family have spent two years in Kuwait and are very excited to enjoy the mountains of Busan.

Sarah Muller grew up in rural Queensland, Australia and moved overseas for the first time as an exchange student in grade 11. The desire to live and work internationally grew from there and led her to work in Canada, England, and Costa Rica before transitioning to the field of education. For the past six years, Sarah has been able to combine her passion for the social sciences with her love of English literature and creative writing by teaching in Kuwait, Jordan, and Busan. Sarah is excited to be returning for her second year at BFS and will be teaching AP Psychology, Society & Culture, Introduction to Literature, and American Literature. Sarah’s goal is to build strong relationships with her students in order to support their development as avid thinkers, readers, writers, and engaged citizens of the world around them.

Jocelyn Slovak is thrilled to be joining the faculty at BFS this fall, 2020. Jocelyn grew up in Lancaster Pennsylvania and has always had an interest in literature and writing. She discovered her passion for teaching literature as a New York City Teaching Fellow, and went on to teach writing at the college level while she was earning her Master in Fine Arts at Johns Hopkins. Jocelyn then spent a year researching and writing a novel in Seoul, South Korea, as a Fulbright grantee. The book is now in a second draft phase as a memoir/travelogue that explores the process of becoming, as individual and as family, against odds, in the modern world.

Jocelyn’s highest calling is teaching. Having taught for many years and consulted in education, she has come to the conclusion that teaching well depends most directly on good relationships. She loves the sound of students discussing literature and ideas from different points of view, and thinks of her classroom as a self-governing community. She also loves to help students realize their voices on the page, and takes great pride in helping them gain skill as writers in the last years before they go to college. Jocelyn’s husband Nathaniel, is a legal aid attorney who defends migrant workers. Her son, Christopher (5) is a budding rainbow painter, stuffed animal parent, and cake baker. Jocelyn’s family loves to travel, go camping and hiking, read together, and take care of their cats who, it turns out, are a bit too eccentric to join the family adventure to Busan. Jocelyn also enjoys reading, writing essays and short fiction, travel, music, yoga, and Korean patchwork.

This is Mr. Neeno’s 21st year of teaching abroad, having taught in eight countries on four continents. Mr. Neeno is originally from Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the Midwest until he discovered the joys of exploring the world. Mr. Neeno remains a student of history, as well as science, music, and religion. He enjoys writing, having written articles for magazines and encyclopedias. Mr. Neeno is currently working on collecting his researches and blogs about the places he has traveled to into a book. In the classroom he stresses debate, as it it teaches research skills, reasoning, team work, and backing up what you say with evidence. He has coached teams in Kuwait to victories in debate competitions in the Middle East, as well as Model UN, and Academic Games/Quiz Bowl.

In his spare time Mr. Neeno loves history and travel. He also enjoy music, and hiking. He is currently studying Korean, and discovering more about his fascinating host country every day. He is always trying to broaden his horizons, and learn more about this world and its many peoples.

He is passionate about developing independence and self-efficacy in his students so that they can achieve their learning goals.

Matthew Hanawalt is entering his sixteenth year of teaching and second year at BFS. He started his career teaching at the middle school level in his home state of Iowa in the United States. Then, he spent nine years were spent teaching all levels of high school mathematics at the American School Foundation of Monterrey in Mexico. In the classroom, his goal is to establish an enjoyable classroom culture where students understand mathematics at a deep level. He believes in using investigative-based lessons to help students understand the connections among topics.

Outside of the classroom, Matthew enjoys visiting family and friends, traveling, reading, golf, running, and exploring Korea.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Mr. Yang spent most of his childhood in various countries – mainly in Russia, Thailand, China, and the United States. As a former student of international schools himself, he loves being part of the diverse and family-like community that are unique to schools like BFS. In 2015, after completing his mandatory military service in the Korean air force, Mr. Yang found his passion for teaching when he taught at QSI International School of Minsk in Belarus. His connection with BFS began as a student teacher in 2017. Knowing how friendly, energetic, and talented the BFS family is, he is excited and honored to be able to return to BFS, situated in one of the most beautiful coastal cities in Korea.

Mr. Yang loves playing all kinds of sports. Tennis, which he used to play competitively in high school, is one of his favorites. In addition, he is a certified ice hockey referee in Korea. Her art classes provide students with the means to apply their art productions in a variety of media within the contexts of critical thinking and broaden their social perspectives.

Patrick Galles joined BFS in 2016 as the BFS Shark Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher (K-12). Mr. Galles came to BFS after spending a little more than two decades teaching and leading programs in Tokyo at an American international school quite similar in size and scope to BFS.

Originally from the state of Iowa in the U.S., Pat and his family have called northern Minnesota home since 1996, where, along with his siblings and parents operate an international summer camp program during the summer holidays.

Dr. Dylan Barnes comes to BFS from Tampa, FL. He grew up in New Jersey and found his devotion for teaching and mentoring as a teenager serving as a summer camp counselor and director. Dr. Barnes received his bachelor’s degree in secondary social science education from the University of South Florida and also holds a secondary technology education certificate in the state of Florida. Additionally, Dr. Barnes completed his master’s degree and doctorate in Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction, respectively.

Dr. Barnes is a strong advocate for life-long learning. As an educator, Dr. Barnes strives not only to instruct on various topics of study, but to facilitate learning through practical, real-world application and critical thinking that will continue to benefit students outside of the classroom.

After five years of working as a counselor in Spain, Ms. Martínez moved to the foothills of the Himalayas, in India, where she started her career as a Spanish teacher. She was able to combine her passions; sharing her mother tongue and culture, connecting with a multicultural community, and teaching her students to communicate through a new language. After three years there and led by her passion of exploring new places and learning new skills, Ms. Martínez moved to West Africa, Ghana, where she has been teaching Spanish for the last two years.

Ms. martínez has really enjoyed the world of international teaching, where every student brings a fresh perspective to language learning and enriches the experience with their varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds. These experiences have helped her to open her mind, better understand others’ perspectives, and get a better grip on reality. Andrés started his teaching career 5 years ago, in the Himalayas, teaching French and Spanish as a foreign language in Mussoorie, India. After 3 years in the mountains, he moved to West Africa, Ghana, where he found again an amazing multicultural environment. As a teacher, Andrés loves to engage students from all around the world seeking to learn a new language and a new culture.

She incorporates Korean cultural activities to her classes in order to make them more joyful. Miss Lee is very excited to support our students’ growth emotionally, socially as well as academically. After teaching special education and reading for over 20 years in Arizona and Oregon she decided to explore the world of education outside the U.S. Deborah’s education and personal journeys have taken her to Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Egypt before coming to Korea. In Nigeria, she was the Learning Support Coordinator as well as the behavior intervention specialist for grades K-12 at the International School in Abuja. In Zimbabwe, Deborah was the Learning Support Specialist for grades K-3 and the PYP program at the Harare International School. She also led assessment trainings for the elementary staff. In Egypt, Deborah was the Learning Support and ESL teacher for Grade 3 at The American International School in Egypt.

Ms. Allepuz, a native of Barcelona (Spain), is starting her sixth year at Busan Foreign School and looking forward to letting the world know about Busan Foreign School. After graduating from Brussels (Belgium) she started working for an American consultancy firm while pursuing her masters in international management. Ms. Allepuz further developed managing complex projects, working within intercultural teams, coaching, and training staff in customer service organizations while becoming an expert in a in a wide array of industries like utilities, banking, logistics for highly professional and reputable companies, such as,ABN AMRO Bank, DHL and APM Terminals to name a few. Having lived and worked on three continents and being a mother of four children (three of them attending BFS), she knows how important the school community is for expatriate parents as well as how critical it is for parents to understand what the school they are sending their children to is truly all about. Ms. Allepuz is fluent in Spanish, English, French and Italian. She is looking forward to seeing BFS grow in the hearts of its parents, students, teachers, and broader community, as well as solidifying BFS’ image as the American international school of choice for the English speaking community of Busan.

  • Changwon National University: Bachelors in International Relations

Ms. Choi started her career at BFS after graduating from Changwon National University. While in College, she worked on marketing projects for the Korea Airport Corporation (KAC), and Changwon City. She received a grand award for her designs from the Korea Airport Corporation. Ms. Choi understands the importance that good design plays in communicating with stakeholders.
