Mr. Brenneman is excited to return to BFS and take on the role of upper school principal. He seeks to make BFS a safe place for all students to learn and works to ensure that all teachers are providing engaging and meaningful learning opportunities for students to grow.

He loves seeing ways that students are learning in academics, athletics, and artistic pursuits and supports the many ways that students can do those things at BFS. He is especially happy that this year his daughter will be a senior at BFS and will get to graduate from such a great school. His son will continue studying at Washington State in the U.S., and his wife will be helping MS students develop literacy skills at BFS.

If he is not at work, chance are you’ll find him on mountain trails near school or exploring other hiking areas around Busan.

Ms. Lauren Harvey is thrilled to return to BFS as the Elementary Principal (PK – Grade 5) after previously serving as the BFS PK-12 Vice Principal from 2016-2019. Since then, she has gained valuable experience in educational leadership positions in Hawaii and Jeju-do. Ms. Harvey is passionate about ensuring a safe, joyful, and engaging learning environment that supports all students to develop academic and socioemotional skills. Ms. Harvey believes that BFS is a small school with a big heart where every student is known and valued, and she looks forward to collaborating with all members of the BFS community. Ms. Harvey is a proud member of the ISS Diversity Collaborative, National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP).

In her free time, Ms. Harvey enjoys spreading time with her family and dog, reading non-fiction, and listening to music.

Mr. Saunders will be starting his 15th year at Busan Foreign School as the Director of Admissions and College Counseling. After graduating from Ithaca College, his first career path took him to Washington, D.C. working in the U.S. Congress as a legislative assistant and assistant press secretary. While in Washington, D.C. he pursued his graduate degree earning an M.A. from American University. After trying his hand at the federal level of government, Mr. Saunders returned to his home state of Massachusetts taking on the role of chief of staff for a state senator in Boston. He left the world of politics and became manager of major corporate accounts for Akamai Technologies based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Mr. Saunders discovered his passion for teaching after volunteering at the Boston Area Red Cross, teaching history and civics to adults on the path to U.S. citizenship. Mr. Saunders’ transitioned to education over 15 years ago as he became a certified high school social studies teacher in the state of Massachusetts. He taught in the western suburbs of Boston before throwing his hat into the international teaching ring landing here at Busan Foreign School.

Ms. Austin-Castillo has been our school counselor and psychologist since August 2020. She joined Busan Foreign School after spending 13 years as a school psychologist in Northern California. Ms. Austin-Castillo is excited to continue supporting students to achieve their personal and academic goals both directly, through 1:1 counseling and delivery of classroom social emotional learning lessons, and indirectly, through consultation and systems-level advocacy. She believes in creating environments that foster growth and connection.

Outside of work, Ms. Austin-Castillo loves to travel and explore the outdoors with her husband and daughter. She is an avid hiker, runner, and reader. Ms. Austin-Castillo welcomes you to contact her to discuss student well-being, school culture, and/or your favorite novels and hiking trails.

When not traveling the world she enjoys reading, spending time with her nephews/niece and hiking. She is thrilled to be starting her fourth year at Busan Foreign School.

Mr. Hanawalt is entering his seventeenth year of teaching and third year at BFS. He started his career teaching at the middle school level in his home state of Iowa in the United States. Then, he spent nine years were spent teaching all levels of high school mathematics at the American School Foundation of Monterrey in Mexico. In the classroom, his goal is to establish an enjoyable classroom culture where students understand mathematics at a deep level. He believes in using investigative-based lessons to help students understand the connections among topics.

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Hanawalt enjoys visiting family and friends, traveling, reading, playing golf, running, biking, and exploring Korea.

Mr. Gates is a native of La Crosse, Wisconsin and is enjoying his ninth year teaching secondary mathematics at Busan Foreign School. In addition to teaching, Mr. Gates has also enjoyed various coaching opportunities, including middle school and high school basketball and volleyball.

In his free time, he enjoys learning about new things and cultures, listening to music, watching sports, and staying active. He is grateful for all of the opportunities and challenges presented during his time teaching at BFS, both in and out of the classroom.

Ms. Kjelden is excited to be returning for her second year at BFS. Her teaching career began in Houston, Texas as a preschool teacher. Soon Ms. Kjelden’s desire to travel and explore the world led her to Spain where she was an English teacher for students of all ages. During this time Ms. Kjelden discovered her love of teaching ESL students and returned to the United States to teach at a bilingual school in Denver, Colorado while working toward a master’s degree in Teaching English Language Learners. Ms. Kjelden is very excited be working with your child this year!

In her free time Ms. Kjelden enjoys hiking, camping, swimming, and reading.

Ms. Smyth is looking forward to joining the BFS community! Originally from Montreal, Canada, Ms. Smyth has been teaching for over 14 years. She has taught in Canada, Australia, South Korea, and China. Ms. Smyth has experience teaching in remote Indigenous communities in Canada, public and private schools, and in International schools abroad. Ms. Smyth’s passion for education is in redesigning learning environments. Through her research in her M.A she explored the importance of meaningful places in childhood. Ms. Smyth has designed a variety of learning environments in schools focusing on the physical environment as the third teacher, and promoting the importance Inquiry-based learning through exploration, discovery and play within the natural environment.

In her spare time, Ms. Smyth enjoys travelling and exploring the outdoors. She likes hiking, biking, camping, snorkelling, and playing soccer.

This is Ms. Empson’s first year teaching Kindergarten at BFS. Prior to BFS, she has taught in lower elementary for the past six years in Istanbul, Turkey. She loves teaching young learners because their excitement for learning mirrors her own. Ms. Empson embraces a growth mindset in all aspects of life and empowers her students to take on challenges with resilience.

Ms. Empson enjoys exploring, improv, speaking Turkish, and using travel as a means to learn about new perspectives and diverse cultures.

Mr. Cassel is excited for second year as a licensed teacher at BFS after completing his student-teaching as a Shark! He takes a T.E.A.M. First approach, as Together Everyone Achieves More. His teaching career has taken him to Seoul, Osaka, Hanoi, and Busan. Originally from the sweetest place on Earth, Hershey, Pennsylvania, he loves to travel. His passion for teaching lies with primary students as he enjoys their enthusiasm and excitement for learning!

His extracurricular interests include two year old twins. With the little free time he has, he loves going on adventures with his wife, Rebecca, hiking, time on the beach/in the ocean, and ice hockey.

This is Mr. Ehrke’s third year at BFS. His first two years here were in Kindergarten, but now he is teaching Grade 2. Mr. Ehrke looks forward to having in his class students he taught two years ago in K-5, as well as students who have joined BFS since then. Prior to teaching at BFS, Mr. Ehrke taught at the International School of Beijing for fifteen years. Originally from Minnesota, Mr. Ehrke has also lived in San Jose (USA), Vancouver (Canada), Singapore, and Germany. For Mr. Ehrke education is a two-way street. He strives to nurture the love of learning in children, but also endeavors continually to learn from the children he teaches.

Mr. Ehrke enjoys walking, swimming, reading, music, and working with computers, but particularly loves food and travel. When he is able to visit other places, those two loves intersect with visits to markets, exploration of local ingredients and foods, cooking courses, and visits to restaurants/food outlets. When he is not traveling, Mr. Ehrke is watching cooking shows from around the world, where he often finds inspiration when cooking for himself or others.

Mrs. Aguilar will be starting her tenth year of teaching elementary and her fourth year at BFS. Prior to teaching in South Korea, Mrs. Aguilar taught fourth grade for three years in Monterrey, Mexico and lower elementary for three years in Washington DC. She has experience teaching in a bilingual setting and project-based learning.

Currently, she is working on obtaining a reading endorsement to add to her teaching license. Mrs. Aguilar is originally from Los Angeles, and enjoys spending time with family and friends, and exploring the outdoors and new places.

Ms. Kim was born in Korea, but moved to Atlanta, Georgia when she was 8 years old. Ms. Kim has always dreamed of becoming a teacher ever since she was a kid. After following her dreams to become a teacher, she taught four years in Georgia and two years in Korea. During the six years of her teaching career, she worked with a large variety of students such as English Language Learners, students with learning disabilities, and gifted students. This will be Ms. Kim’s first-year teaching at BFS, and she is beyond excited! Ms. Kim loves to see children explore their learning through projects and hands-on activities.

In her free time, Ms. Kim loves to spend time with her dog, Luna. She also loves volleyball, watching movies, spending time with friends, and exploring new places. Ms. Kim hopes to discover new places and hobbies during her time in Busan!

Ms. Hwang graduated from Busan Art high school, Dong-A University and pursued her higher education in Vancouver, Canada. She has been teaching arts at Busan Foreign School for nineteen years! Ms. Hwang teaches all classes, from Elementary to AP Studio Art and Design. Her courses covers a gamut of arts ranging from visual concepts to theory for the elementary grades, to visual communication for AP Studio Art and G6 through G12. Ms. Hwang’s art classes provide students with the means to apply their art productions in a variety of media within the contexts of critical thinking and broaden their social perspectives. Ms. Hwang is married and has one daughter.

In her free time she enjoys experimenting with art media and painting pictures. She also likes hiking, traveling, and exploring new cultures with her family.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, singing karaoke, playing instruments, and video talking with her family in America. Mrs. Pochon is passionate about the growing music program at BFS, and sincerely believes she has the best profession in the world!

She is passionate about creating an enjoyment and excitement in young students and musicians for learning music.

Mr. Santos is a native of San Diego, California but has grown up and lived in places such as Alaska, Washington State, Guam, Japan, and China. He studied Music Education in California State University, Fresno. His primary instrument is the saxophone, but also is proficient in guitar, drums, piano, various brass instruments, and singing.

Before joining the Busan Foreign School staff, Mr. Santos was the music teacher for Kwangju Foreign School teaching music to grades Kindergarten to Grade 12 ranging from orchestra to choir and everything in between. As a new faculty member to BFS, he is excited to get to know the community, teach and make music!

In his free time, Mr. Santos enjoys cooking, running (his New Year’s Resolution is to run 500 kilometers), photography, watching baseball, video games, and solving the New York Times Crossword Puzzle. He enjoys traveling and collects flags where he goes, the collection is up to 19 countries and hopefully to go up if the world finally goes back to normal.

Mr. Galles joined BFS in 2016 as the BFS Shark Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher (K-12). Mr. Galles came to BFS after spending a little more than two decades teaching and leading programs in Tokyo at an American international school quite similar in size and scope to BFS.

Originally from the state of Iowa in the U.S., Mr. Galles and his family have called northern Minnesota home since 1996, where, along with his siblings and parents operate an international summer camp program during the holidays.

As Mr. Galles enters his sixth year at BFS he is eager to continue working hard in support of all BFS students and their families.

Ms. Gleb grew up on Vashon Island, Washington; her father and mother were both teachers. After university, she became an officer in the United States Air Force, serving tours of duty in the United States, England, and Turkey. She has been teaching for 21 years; prior to moving to Busan, she taught for three years in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.
Ms. Gleb’s passions are traveling, reading, and volksmarching (non-competitive walking). Her frequent travel companion is her identical twin sister; they enjoy visiting UNESCO World Heritage sites. She is excited to return for her fourth year as a BFS SHARK!

Ms. Verdes was born and raised in Switzerland, but her family comes from Spain and Uruguay. Growing up in a Spanish speaking family and in a multilingual country, she learned and used many languages in her daily life. When working as a substitute teacher while completing her Bachelor’s degree, she witnessed the language learning process during an English lesson. This inspired her into enter the profession. As a Middle School English and Music teacher she has been teaching for six years in Swiss schools; in the rural canton of Fribourg and in Bern, the Swiss capital. She has also managed a school’s theater troupe for two years as an extracurricular activity. Ms. Verdes loves to share her passion for learning languages in context through music, books, movies, etc.

In her spare time, Ms. Verdes likes going to the cinema, visiting museums and art galleries, listening to music or a choir singing, playing board games, and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys outdoor activities like cycling, exploring nature, and swimming. Traveling to meet new cultures and learning from them is another of her favorite hobbies.

Ms. Lee joined BFS as a high school tutor, and has been working as a part of the BFS team for over 11 years. She has a variety of experience in different educational areas and age groups. Although she majored in science, her interest in different languages and cultures led her to a deeper study of her mother tongue, and becoming a Korean Language teacher. She incorporates Korean cultural activities to her classes in order to make them more joyful. Miss Lee is very excited to support our students’ growth emotionally, socially as well as academically. In her free time, she likes going to the movies and Art galleries, loves taking photos and rendering them into beautiful paintings. She is looking forward to meeting new BFS families and very excited to bring many culture-related activities to the Korean classes this year.

This is Mr. Kavanaugh’s first year teaching at Busan Foreign School. Mr. Kavanaugh previously taught at St. Paul American School in Hanoi and Truesdell Education Campus in Washington D.C. before joining BFS. Mr. Kavanaugh is originally from Michigan, but has also lived and worked in USA, Vietnam, and South Korea. For Mr. Kavanaugh, education is based on the principles of having fun in class, using data to provide personalized learning for each student, and helping students internalize a growth mindset. He is excited to join the team at BFS and is happy to return to Korea.

When not in school, Mr. Kavanaugh enjoys playing music, ice hockey, studying Korean, and relaxing at the beach. He is also an avid traveler and loves to find himself in a new place experiencing different cultures and eating delicious food.

Ms. So starts her twelfth year at BFS. She is excited and proud to be an upper Elementary ELL teacher. Ms. So was born in Sakhalin Island, Russia and has lived in Seattle, Washington and Redondo Beach, California. Ms. So has taught diverse students in the U.S.A. and Korea. Ms. Brenneman joined the BFS team a year ago as the MS & HS ELL Teacher. She is excited to step back into the role of MS English Language Arts teacher and continue working with international students. She grew up in small towns in Missouri and Montana, has lived and taught in three different countries, and understands the pressures and joys of parenting. Ms. Brenneman’s teaching adventures introduced her to Taiwan and South Korea, where she and her husband raised their two children. With a son at university in Washington state, and a daughter preparing to graduate from BFS, she is looking forward to a fantastic year.

Having grown up near Glacier National Park, Ms. Brenneman loves hiking, biking, running, and exploring beautiful places. She enjoys reading, writing, spending time with friends and family, and discovering new things. Her passion for life and sense of humor help her connect with others and explore the intersections of literature and life experiences.

Ms. Amorós loves to teach; she is passionate about growing and learning alongside her students. This is her tenth year teaching, and her first year at BFS. She is coming from Bogotá, Colombia, where she explored the biodiversity in various regions, hiked, drank the best! coffee, and spotted wildlife. Before that, she taught in the Bay Area of California, which she calls home, even though she is originally from Pennsylvania. Ms. Amorós brings her dog, Lulu, from Colombia and her cat, Bon Bon, from the US. She has traveled to many places around the world with her husband, Aristotle, and they are both ecstatic to settle into their dream community of Busan, where they hope to immerse themselves in the culture and meet new people. Ms. Amorós is committed to justice work in and outside of the classroom, and pushes herself to learn from different perspectives.

This is Mr. Neeno’s 20th year of teaching abroad, having taught in eight countries on four continents. Mr. Neeno is originally from Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the Midwest until he discovered the joys of exploring the world. Mr. Neeno remains a student of history, as well as science, music, and religion. He enjoys writing, having written articles for magazines and encyclopedias. He is also an avid board gamer. In the classroom he stresses debate, as it it teaches research skills, reasoning, team work, and backing up what you say with evidence. He has coached the BFS Model UN Team for 5 years, and last year hosted the SKAC MUN Tournament.

In his spare time, Mr. Neeno loves history and travel. He also enjoys music and hiking. He is discovering more about his fascinating host country every day. He is always trying to broaden his horizons, and learn more about this world and its many peoples.

In the classroom, his goal is to establish an enjoyable classroom culture where students understand mathematics at a deep level. Born in Seoul, Korea, Mr. Yang spent most of his childhood in various countries – mainly in Russia, Thailand, China, and the United States. As a former student of international schools himself, he loves being part of the diverse and family-like community that are unique to schools like BFS. In 2015, after completing his mandatory military service in the Korean air force, Mr. Yang found his passion for teaching when he taught at QSI International School of Minsk in Belarus. His connection with BFS began as a student teacher in 2017. Knowing how friendly, energetic, and talented the BFS family is, he is excited and honored to be able to return to BFS, situated in one of the most beautiful coastal cities in Korea.

Mr. Yang loves playing all kinds of sports. Tennis, which he used to play competitively in high school, is one of his favorites. In addition, he is a certified ice hockey referee in Korea. In his spare time, he enjoys playing sports and spending time with friends. Mr. Yang will be teaching 6th and 7th grade Mathematics, Makerspace, and AP Economics.

Her courses covers a gamut of arts ranging from visual concepts to theory for the elementary grades, to visual communication for AP Studio Art and G6 through G12. Ms. Hwang’s art classes provide students with the means to apply their art productions in a variety of media within the contexts of critical thinking and broaden their social perspectives. Ms. Hwang is married and has one daughter.

Before joining the Busan Foreign School staff, Mr. Santos was the music teacher for Kwangju Foreign School teaching music to grades Kindergarten to Grade 12 ranging from orchestra to choir and everything in between. As a new faculty member to BFS, he is excited to get to know the community, teach and make music!

In his free time, Mr. Santos enjoys cooking, running (his New Year’s Resolution is to run 500 kilometers), photography, watching baseball, video games, and solving the New York Times Crossword Puzzle. He enjoys traveling and collects flags where he goes, the collection is up to 19 countries and hopefully to go up if the world finally goes back to normal.

Dr. Barnes comes to BFS from Tampa, FL. He grew up in New Jersey and found his devotion for teaching and mentoring as a teenager serving as a summer camp counselor and director. When working as a substitute teacher while completing her Bachelor’s degree, she witnessed the language learning process during an English lesson. This inspired her into enter the profession. As a Middle School English and Music teacher she has been teaching for six years in Swiss schools; in the rural canton of Fribourg and in Bern, the Swiss capital. She has also managed a school’s theater troupe for two years as an extracurricular activity. Ms. Verdes loves to share her passion for learning languages in context through music, books, movies, etc.

In her spare time, Ms. Verdes likes going to the cinema, visiting museums and art galleries, listening to music or a choir singing, playing board games, and spending time with family and friends. After almost eight years in professional journalism and communications, he reconnected with his passion for languages.

Mr. Cassinello started his teaching career 5 years ago, in the Himalayas, teaching French and Spanish as a foreign language in Mussoorie, India. After 3 years in the mountains, he moved to West Africa, Ghana, where he found again an amazing multicultural environment. As a teacher, Mr. Cassinello loves to engage students from all around the world seeking to learn a new language and a new culture.

In his free time, he travels as much as possible. He loves discovering new cultures, cuisines, and different ways of living. He is also passionate about cinema and outdoor activities, such as hiking, running, and soccer.

Mr. Kebbas is honored to be joining Busan Foreign School for the upcoming school year. Not long ago, Mr. Kebbas began his teaching career as a substitute teacher in Southern California. Even then, he took the opportunity to instruct students of different ages and from varying background. After earning his secondary teaching credential, he moved north to teach throughout California’s Central Coast. Longing for a change in climate, Mr. Kebbas applied with Korea’s EPIK program and moved to Busan in August of 2018. Having enjoyed this change of environment, he decided to prolong his stay and began pursuing a graduate degree in education.

As of now, Mr. Kebbas is excited to continue his journey in South Korea alongside his beloved wife and their newly welcomed son. Becoming a good dad will be one of Mr. Kebbas top priorities, along with helping his students grow and prosper as members of the BFS community!

HaeYoung Cheon, the Deputy Director of the Administration Office, joined Busan Foreign School in 2020. Prior to coming to BFS, his working experience started at the KT group. He then moved on to work as a public servant in Busan City. Together with his working experiences in both private and public sectors, and deep understanding of international affairs, he is excited to support the BFS community.

When he is not working, HaeYoung loves spending time at the beach (during summer), and skiing in the winter.

Heejeong Shim – Administrative Assistant (hshim@bfs.or.kr)

Ms. Shim has completed bachelors’ degree in English Literature from Donga University and this is her fitfth year at BFS. She complemented her studies in England and Canada as she wished to learn more about foreign cultures and perfect her English. She has has experience as a volunteer with children and is very glad to be working at school as a member of BFS.

Hyun Jung (Chloe) Kim – Administrative Assistant (hjkim@bfs.or.kr)

Educational Background

  • Silla University: Bachelor of Library and Information Science

Ms. Chloe studied Library and Information at Silla University. Prior to BFS, she worked in the hospitality industry abroad for years. She enjoys challenge and novelty as well as working with people of different cultures and backgrounds. She is very excited to contribute to the excellent teamwork and positive energy of BFS.

Jee Hae Park – Administrative Assistant (jhpark@bfs.or.kr)

  • Dong-A university: Bachelors in Chinese Studies

Ms. Park has a bachelor’s degree in Chinese Studies from Donga University. Prior to BFS, she worked at two other schools. She was the assistant vice-principal at the first where she also helped teachers with their duties so they could concentrate on their students. At the second school, she was in charge of scholarships and funding. She is excited to assist parents, students, and teachers at BFS.

Su Jin Chang – Early Childhood Instructional Assistant (schang@bfs.or.kr)

  • Pukyong National University: Bachelors in Computer Engineering

Ms. Chang has bachelors’ degree in Computer Engineering from Pukyong National University.

This is Ms. Chang’s second year at BFS. Although having worked for several international organizations, it is her experience as a volunteer in Ukraine, teaching and helping children, that prompted her to apply to BFS.

She is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and creating lasting memories with the children of BFS.

Hyun Bo Shin – Information Technology Support  (hbshin@bfs.or.kr)

Mr. Shin has a strong time background working as an Information Technology Consultant in diverse industries such as banking, education, trading, and health. He enjoys testing new technologies and believes in their efficient use. He is committed to improving BFS’ information technology environment.

Hyun Suk Kim– Nurse (hskim@bfs.or.kr)

Work Experience

  • Busan Catholic University : Bachelors in Clinical Pathology

Hyun Suk Kim graduated from Busan Catholic University with a major in Clinical Pathology. She has a license as a clinical pathologist. She has worked at the children’s hospital and Health Promotion Center for 10 years. She also majored in English literature at the Korean National Open University. Last year she took the Korea Red Cross certificate for first- aid. Ms. Kim is always ready to help students when they need her.

Jason Lee – Finance Director (jlee@bfs.or.kr)

Jason Lee joined BFS June 2017. He has a strong background in finance and strategy. His past experience includes five and a half years as a management consultant at Deloitte, and a year working in the strategy department of Hyundai Motor Group. Jason spent one year in London pursuing an MBA.

During his spare time Jason enjoys playing golf, and spending time with his family.

Naro Ha – Accountant (nha@bfs.or.kr)

  • BA Nursing Science from the Inje Medical School, Busan.
  • Office Productivity and Database Administration Korean National Certificate.

Ms. Ha comes to us after three years working at Inje University Hospital as a nurse. With a strong background in computer sciences, she is excited to expand her knowledge to the education industry, working for the Finance department.

Vanessa Allepuz – Marketing & Communications Director (vallepuz@bfs.or.kr)

Ms. Allepuz, a native of Barcelona (Spain), is starting her sixth year at Busan Foreign School and looking forward to letting the world know about Busan Foreign School. After graduating from Brussels (Belgium) she started working for an American consultancy firm while pursuing her masters in international management. Ms. Allepuz further developed managing complex projects, working within intercultural teams, coaching, and training staff in customer service organizations while becoming an expert in a in a wide array of industries like utilities, banking, logistics for highly professional and reputable companies, such as,ABN AMRO Bank, DHL and APM Terminals to name a few. Having lived and worked on three continents and being a mother of four children (three of them attending BFS), she knows how important the school community is for expatriate parents as well as how critical it is for parents to understand what the school they are sending their children to is truly all about. Ms. Allepuz is fluent in Spanish, English, French and Italian. She is looking forward to seeing BFS grow in the hearts of its parents, students, teachers, and broader community, as well as solidifying BFS’ image as the American international school of choice for the English speaking community of Busan.

Goeun Choi – Marketing & Communications (gechoi@bfs.or.kr)

  • Changwon National University: Bachelors in International Relations

Ms. Choi started her career at BFS after graduating from Changwon National University. While in College, she worked on marketing projects for the Korea Airport Corporation (KAC), and Changwon City. She received a grand award for her designs from the Korea Airport Corporation. Ms. Choi understands the importance that good design plays in communicating with stakeholders.
