The Best At It by Maulik Pancholy
Realistic Fiction
The Best At It, by Maulik Pancholy, is a realistic fiction book showing the life of an Indian kid going into seventh grade. The protagonist Rahul lives in a small town in Indiana. He lives with his parents, his younger brother named Arun, and his grandpa called Bhai. As he goes into the seventh grade he discovers that he might be gay. Along the way, Rahul deals with friends, school, racism, self-discovery, and more. I give this book 4/5 stars due to the fact that some parts were predictable, but other than that I enjoyed how the book portrayed middle school problems. The author includes relatable conflicts as well as small details that readers can catch about each character, such as hints about what may happen next. If you enjoyed Stand Up Yumi Chung by Jessica Kim you may enjoy this book because of the middle school conflicts and perspective.
