Stand Up, Yumi Chung! by Jessica Kim
Realistic Fiction

Stand Up, Yumi Chung! By Jessica Kim, is a realistic fiction book that follows a story about middle school life of Yumi Chung, a 11 year old korean girl who lives in Los Angeles and has a talent for comedy. She doesn’t have enough confidence to show her proficient talent and her parents don’t understand how much comedy means to her and force Yumi to make her education and grades as her target. Yum’s sister Yuri, gives up medical school and decides to leave home. Her family’s restaurant faces payment dues, and if it doesn’t get paid, their restaurant will be shut down. The lies Yumi creates in order to keep up with her grades and her comedy creates broken friendships and problems with her family’s hope in Yumi’s development. My connections with her parents making her focus on her education and doing everything just for her education helps me get a better perspective on parents and how Yumi might feel like in this situation. I give this book five stars because it shows deep thoughts within the main character Yumi, and shows the different struggles Yumi faces while trying to reach her goal, being the New Me.
