On Thursday, November 9th, BFS hosted the 1st Annual BFS/BIFS Invitational Model United Nations Tournament. 39 students represented 27 countries in a Model UN, where they debated such current issues as the crisis in the Ukraine, North Korean nuclear weapons, gender equality, LGBTQ rights, food security, and regulating artificial intelligence. Students, working with MUN Coaches, Mr. Neeno and Ms. Wiehe, researched their country’s stance on global issues, drew up and defended proposals to be debated, while wheeling and dealing in lightning fast negotiations.
Several students performed especially well. These include
- Hidaya, who represented Nigeria in the Human Rights Committee, and shepherded the passage of the proposal on gender equality, received the award for Best Delegate in her committee.
- Jake, representing Canada in the Human Rights Committee, was runner up.
- Harrison, representing Mexico in the Economic and Social Issues Committee (ECOSOC), received the award for best delegate in his committee.
- Jin, representing Morocco in ECOSOC, was runner up.
Hats off as well to chairpersons Bini (ECOSOC), and Ilya (Human Rights Committee).
All the students received exposure to critical world issues, and a taste of intrigue and excitement of international diplomacy. Now on to SKAC MUN November 21!
