For the month of March, thousands of schools around the world celebrate literacy. Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write. Here at Busan Foreign School, we stayed incredibly busy and active to celebrate these essential skills that affect each of us.

On Friday, March 2nd,  elementary teachers read a Dr. Seuss book to their students. PreK3- Kindergarten had a special breakfast of green eggs and ham to celebrate the authors birthday.

On Wednesday, March 7th, The middle school students and the elementary students enjoyed spending time reading with their book buddy.

On Friday, March 16th, HS Stuco and the PTSO welcomed parents and students to have breakfast at school. Breakfast was free for anyone who wanted to join us in the cafeteria. Parents could read with their child to share the love of reading together. We had a great turn out and we even ran out of food!

On Tuesday, March 20th, Miss Wesen had a Library open house after schools. Students gave their parents a tour of the library and they were welcome to check out books. We had 17 parents come which was a great improvement from last years turn-out!

On Thursday, March 22, we had a Literacy Fair event in the auditorium. The PK3 class showed their Three Little Pigs video. The third-grade class showed the books trailers they made in the library with Mr. Morrison’s wonderful assistance. Parents could look at the tables with displays of their child’s work that exhibits literacy. The fourth and fifth graders also created some book trailers in their classroom that they showed on the Ipads.

Throughout the month, we had many parent volunteers come be a guest reader in their child’s classroom. This was fantastic in that parents took the time out of their busy day to come read! Thank you, parents!

In Library we had a Nonfiction reading challenge for the month of March. Our goal was to check out 350 nonfiction books! Students had to share a fact that they learned from the books they checked out. The elementary students crushed this goal by checking out a total of 516 books! That is 166 books more than our goal! Way to go! We will celebrate this event by enjoying some delicious ice cream on Thursday, April 12th.

On Frida,y March 23, the entire BFS student population (250 students) all gathered into the gym to silent read for 15 minutes. This event will end our literacy month events and it will be a exciting conclusion to this month’s events honoring literacy!
