Reading Workshop
Learning Objective: Students will be able to… discuss main characters’ tendencies and personalities, as well as author’s craft, in series books.
Summary:
We have been working through our final reading unit. In this unit students have been working in book clubs and have been working together in groups to think about and ask questions about when characters encounter familiar characters and places, book after book, throughout a series. Our thinking across books helps build reading stamina and also sets up students to read in longer, multi-chapter novels. We are continuing to focus on our fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, and thinking about the author’s craft.
Writing Workshop
Learning Objective: Students will be able to… analyze the structures of poetry to see poetry through “poet’s eyes”.
Summary: Students have been analyzing the structures of poetry to determine the role that observations play in our everyday life and our feelings play. Students will continue experimenting with language, word choice, and line breaks to create emotion and music within their poems. Students are encouraged to read and discuss poetry with their families at home.
Math
Learning Objective: Students will be able to…understand the foundations of multiplication and division.
Summary: We are continuing our sixth unit which lays the foundation for learning multiplication and division next year in third grade. Students are currently learning about arrays, rows, columns, making equal groups, and moving from concrete work with objects to more abstract pictorial representations.
Science
Learning Objective: Students will be able to… describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties
Summary: Students have already chosen their topics for the upcoming science fair and we will begin our investigations and experiments next week! Students have created a guiding question to guide their experiment, crafted a hypothesis, list of materials, procedure, and determined their controls and variables. The science projects will be worked on primarily during Science and Makerspace time. Parents are encouraged to join us on Friday, June 2 for the science fair presentations. The science fair will begin at 2:45 PM and will run until about 3:15 ~ 3:30. We hope to see you there!
